Featherite MID FreeTesting & MID Free Process

Featherite tests the products to see if they are M.I.D Free (Mites, Impurities and Dust Free). The actual cleansing process that makes the products M.I.D Free is not performed by Featherite.

Featherite M.I.D Free Tests

Oxygen Index Test:

Tests the amount of foreign organic matter present in a feather and down sample.
Featherite certified products have an Oxygen Index number under 5, classifying them as hypoallergenic.
Ensures that all potential mites and microorganisms have been removed from the down and feathers.

Content Analysis Test:

Analyses a feather and down sample to quantify its make-up.
Separates down from feathers and any other impurities that may be present in sample, e.g. lesser known elements like feather fibres, down fibres, damaged feathers and residue.

Turbidity Test:

Checks the level of dust in a feather and down sample.
To be classified dust-free, a product must have a turbidity value of under 11.6NTU.
All Featherite products have a turbidity rating of under 7.5NTU, classifying them as super-clean.

General Feather Cleansing Process (differs from source to source)

The feathers and down are

Prewashed.
Main Wash:

Washed with an antibacterial and degreasing detergent.
Rinsed.
Washed with an antibacterial and degreasing detergent.
Rinsed twice.
Rinsed a final time during which a disinfectant is added to the rinse.

Dried and sterilised under steam pressure between 120º - 140º centigrade to conform to all international standards.
Dedusted to remove any dust or feather particles present.

Finally, a sample is sent to the Featherite Laboratories at which the samples are tested and either certified “Featherite M.I.D Free, super-clean and hypoallergenic” or rejected and rewashed/sterilised until in accordance with the Featherlite regulations and standards.
